Monika Nissander and Marléne Ström welcome visitors to the Sommaröhallen crafts shop in Södra Vallgrund.
“We only sell products we would like to buy ourselves. Sommaröhallen is known for excellent quality,” says Marléne Ström, vice-chair of the Södra Vallgrund village association.
The stock includes, for example, knitted clothes for children, ornaments, paintings and books. The most popular purchases are freshly baked buns and bread. Other delicacies on sale are home-made juices, jams, honey and sweets. The products come from about a hundred craftspeople from all over the Ostrobothnia region and some of these take turns working as salespersons in the shop. In addition, the village association hires one villager every year to work at Sommaröhallen.

Great community spirit keeps the shop thriving
Sommaröhallen is open every day between 19th May and 27th August. In September the shop is open from Friday to Sunday. Sommaröhallen is also open for Christmas shopping in December. In 2015, the crafts shop attracted about 10,000 visitors. Groups are also welcome outside normal opening periods by prior arrangement.
“Sommaröhallen is a great place to visit and lots of people come back again and again,” says Monika Nissander, the secretary of the village association.
Sommaröhallen opened its doors in 1992 in an effort to attract more customers to the village grocery shop. The crafts shop is located in a former bus garage which was renovated by volunteers, organised by the Södra Vallgrund village association. The great community spirit of the village made the work possible, and the crafts shop is still run by the village association’s volunteers. There are plans underway to extend the shop to make room for even more products.
