Descriptions

Population. The indicator shows the population living permanently in the area at the end of the year (the 31st of December). The population projection for 2040 released by Statistics Finland is a demographic trend calculation in which population development is assumed to continue on the same trend as in recent years.

Preliminary population statistics. Population includes Finnish and foreign nationals who are permanently resident in Finland. After the end of a statistical reference month, there is a period of two weeks before compiling of the preliminary data begins. Move notifications that arrive later than this are included in the statistics for the next reference month according to the actual date of the event.

The proportion of people of working age. The indicator shows the share of the population aged 15–64 in the region.

Age structure. The indicator shows the age structure of the population in the five-year age groups in 2000, 2019 and 2040 (Statistics Finland’s population projection).

*Languages and nationalities of groups amounting to more than 10 people have been included. In 2018, the City of Vaasa recorded a total of 121 nationalities and 96 mother tongues (Nationalities and languages of less than 10 people are also included).

The number of ​​spoken foreign languages. The indicator shows the total number of non-domestic languages ​​spoken. National languages ​​are Finnish, Swedish and Sami. NOTE! For privacy reasons, language groups of less than 10 people cannot be presented. For this reason, the actual number of spoken languages​ is larger than the recorded number.

International population. The indicator shows the proportion of foreign-language speakers of the population in which case the number includes persons whose mother tongue is other than Finnish, Swedish or Sami.

The number of foreign nationalities. The indicator shows the total number of nationalities. NOTE! For privacy reasons, the nationality of groups of less than 10 persons cannot be presented. For this reason, the actual number of nationalities​ is larger than the recorded number. If a person has dual-nationality status one of which is Finnish, he or she is counted as a Finnish citizen in the statistics.
