The Port of Vaasa Group and Vattenfall have on 18 March 2025 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Vattenfall is currently developing an industrial scale offshore wind farm in Korsnäs, near Vaasa. The central location of the Port of Vaasa on the West Coast of Finland and the proximity to the amenities of the City of Vaasa provide a competitive edge to Vattenfall. The region is known for its tech-skilled workforce, offering also diverse housing opportunities, education at all levels, and good logistical connections.

– We are happy to sign this MoU with Port of Vaasa and start the cooperation. Ports are essential to the development of an offshore wind farm. They play a key role for the local supply chain and for example the storage of wind farm components, says Klaus Nissen, the Project Director from Vattenfall.

As the home port of the EnergyVaasa cluster, the Port of Vaasa works resolutely towards developing into a versatile energy port, where large and heavy projects can be handled efficiently.

– We are very pleased to enter into this MoU with Vattenfall. It aligns with our offshore wind strategy: we are committed to becoming one of the top ports in accelerating the green transition and functioning as a central node in the energy supply chain. Our main potential lies in offshore wind operations and maintenance, but we are naturally also exploring a possible role in the transportation and installation phase. Our infrastructure development is based on planned synergies with other industrial sectors that we are working with, says Janne Pylkkönen, Managing Director of the Port of Vaasa Group.

– By signing this MoU and looking to position itself as an energy port, the Port of Vaasa is intertwined even more closely with the EnergyVaasa cluster. This advancement is part of the long-term development that benefits the port well into the future, says Riitta Björkenheim, Development Director of VASEK.
