kiikarikuvaSeveral international experts on transport and communications will assemble in Umeå and Vaasa on April 20th–22nd for the KvarkenMoS conference: a three-day event organized in Finland and Sweden and on the seas. The event belongs to the European Commission’s Motorways of the Sea seminar series and provides an excellent foundation for the wider introduction of the E12 Corridor’s development work and the Midway Alignment of the Bothnian Corridor project. The seminar’s themes focus on northern transport routes and strategies for remote and peripheral regions for the creation of functional and effective transport routes.

Introducing the Midway Alignment Project

The Midway Alignment project’s financing application, delivered to the European Commission in February, now benefits from the fact that the EU officials preparing the financing are given the chance to thoroughly familiarize themselves with the said transport and communications corridor. The seminar is attended by, among others, Mr. Brian Simpson, Coordinator of the Motorways of the Sea, and Mr. José Anselmo, Ten-T and Motorways of the Sea policy advisor. Simpson will hold a speech on the second day of the event in Umeå, whereas Anselmo will take the floor in Vaasa.

- Financing decisions are naturally made on a political level, but the work of the officials carries great significance in this matter, says Mr. Mathias Lindström, Director of the Kvarken Council, when asked about the financing possibilities.

Focus on the Economic Life

In addition to Simpson and Anselmo, several other international top-names, such as Mr. Vitor Fraga, Regional Secretary for Tourism and Transport in the Azores, and Mr. Paul Holthus, CEO of World Ocean Council, will attend the seminar. The economic life is also well represented in Umeå and Vaasa. In addition to company representatives, the event in Umeå will host Mr. Per Olof Lingwall, National Coordinator of the Swedish National Public Transport Agency, and Mr. Risto E. J. Penttilä, CEO of the Finnish Chamber of Commerce. Speeches will also be held by the representatives of the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications, Senior Adviser Mr. Lassi Hilska and High Level Representative Mr. Juhani Tervala.

The seminar is organized by the E12 Atlantica Transport project (supported by the Interreg Botnia-Atlantica programme) in cooperation with the Kvarken Council, the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia, Region Västerbotten and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE).

The seminar series forms part of the activities of the Motorways of the Sea programme. The programme’s goal is to improve the possibilities for maritime freight transport by e.g. improving maritime routes, port pairs and port services.

The E12 Atlantica Transport project is a collaboration project between Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian partners operating along the E12 Corridor. The project focuses on a functional transport route for freight and passengers, joint strategies for cross-border planning and future cooperation structures.
